2021 Unchartered Waters

Uncharted Waters is an investigative project created by Dr Sandra Johnston and Dr Denys Blacker in which they offer students and researchers an unknown space of potential where it might be possible to imagine activities, objects or encounters that we can will into action.

We have taken as the image for this area a beautiful anonymous nautical chart in portolan style probably drawn in Genoa (ca 1320-1350). It covers the Mediterranean Sea from the Balearic Islands to the Levantine coast as well as to the western part of Black Sea. It is the oldest original cartographic artifact in the Library of Congress.
