Despina Olbrich-Marianou was born in Athens, Greece, where she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, graduating with the diploma in painting and mosaics and with the pedagogical exams for teaching. She attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany, and graduated with the diploma in painting and graphic art. Her scope of work comprises objects, Installations, textile works, drawings, land-art projects and performances. She participated in national and international art events, e.g. in Spain, Mexico, Canada, China, Denmark, Czech Republic, Korea, Finland, England, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Thailand, Austria, Cyprus and Greece. Alongside more general sociocritical reflections, she also tries to know herself through her works. Since 1971 till 2010 she has been working as an art teacher in Munich. From time to time she lives and works on the Creek island Andros in the Cyclades.
